GitHub Spark is an AI-powered tool for creating and sharing micro apps (“sparks”), which can be tailored to your exact needs and preferences, and are directly usable from your desktop and mobile devices. Without needing to write or deploy any code.
How daheck do I try it?
It is currently under testing stage and there are only select testers. You can visit this page for a technical preview. GitHub shared a video on their YouTube channel showcasing how it works.
Apparently, it supports many different models such as Claude, GPT-4o etc. for creating programs. It also has a revisions feature which allows you to "go back in time" as GitHub puts it. You can also change the color and overall theme of your project in a single click.
What daheck are "micro apps"?
GitHub Spark subscribes to the Unix philosophy for apps, where software can be unapologetic about doing one thing, and doing it well–specifically for you, and the duration of time that it’s useful. So “micro” doesn’t refer to the size of the app’s value, but rather, the size of its intended feature complexity.
For example, here are some sparks that the GitHub team made (and use!), during the process of creating GitHub Spark. These range from life management tools, learning aids, silly animations, and news clients. But the common thread across them all is: they look and feel exactly how the creator wanted them to. Nothing more and absolutely nothing less.
An allowance tracker for kids, which can be shared in either read-only or read-write mode (for parents), and uses an LLM to generate a celebratory message when an earning goal is reached
Instant Previews
GitHub spark doesn't just generate code for you, it immediately allows you to preview it. And Even better? Whenever you change something, it updates instantly!
Deployment-free hosting
You don't need to deploy your programs with GitHub spark. It does that for you!
The bad things
We haven't gotten access to GitHub Spark yet, so we cannot tell anything about how bad or good it is. However, it looks extremely cool from what GitHub has shared with us - and we hope it turns out to be something good!
Conclusion
GitHub says that Spark is in a very early stage of development, and that there's a long to-do list. GitHub Spark will be available to everyone once its development is complete. Its pricing is unknown, however, it is free for now in its preview stage.
